    Mardugal One campground

    Mardugal One Campground

    Site accessibility: 2WD

    Type of camping: Managed campsite

Along with its neighbour, Mardugal Two, this seasonal campsite has all the facilities you need in a comfortable base to explore Kakadu. The managed campground is about 6 km from Cooinda and is a great staging ground for day trips to the Jim Jim and Mary River regions or to launch your boat and go fishing. Here you can enjoy encounters with Kakadu’s wildlife – agile wallabies are abundant during the day and there are large colonies of bats nearby in the evening. The Gungardun Walk and Mardugal Billabong Walk offer opportunities to enjoy the beautiful surroundings. Fishers can use the boat ramp to access Mardugal Billabong, where barramundi and saratoga are often biting.

    Mardugal Two Campground
Its neighbour, Mardugal Two Campground is a pretty camping spot with lots of wildlife. The campground has its own showers and toilets but shares other facilities with its neighbour, Mardugal One.The boat ramp is about 500 m away.

Woodland habitat at the Gungardun Walk
Gungardun Woodlands Walk - 2km walk near Mardugal camp ground through eucalypt woodlands. Spot Agile Wallabies and other wildlife. Starts at the caravan section of the Mardugal Camping Area. Features: A 1km return walk follows the edge of Mardugal Billabong. Families of kaldurrk (blue-winged kookaburras) noisily advertise their presence first thing in the morning and late in the day. Keep an eye out for rakul (partidge pidgeon) wandering around on the woodland floor. Kornobolo (agile wallabies) and dalkken (dingos) can often be seen as well. The botanically inclined will notice several species of eucalypts, bloodwoods, sand palms and liniment trees like turkey bush.

    Mardugal Billabong Walk
A short, shady loop around picture-perfect Mardugal Billabong. This relaxing walk takes you to a beautiful picnic spot overlooking the water. The billabong is lined with andjimjim (water pandanus), towering silver-leaved paperbarks and shady syzygiums. Take a fishing rod and fish from the high bank at the end of the walk, but if you get a snag say goodbye to your lure – large saltwater crocs live in this billabong so stay out of the water. They rarely show themselves but they are there – don’t go down the bank to the water’s edge!
